Android 12 (internally codenamed Snow Cone) is a 19th version of Android, which was announced on 18 Feb 2021.

Android 12 rethinks the design of Android, by introducing "Material You" - a new material design language that changes the way Android looks significantly by using more modern and rounded shapes and colours.

  • Redesigned the entire system's User Interface into the new "Material You" style.
  • The new Wallpaper and Style Menu shows every style option in a single page.
  • Added Wallpaper-Based colors on top of the 4 default system colors.
  • Added Themed Icons, which themes supported icons on the Home Screen around your system colors.
    • In Android 12, only System Apps are supported.
  • Added a new Privacy Dashboard, which shows Permission usage as well as Camera and Mic usage.
  • Added the ability to disable system-wide Camera and Mic access.
  • Added an Extra Dim toggle in the Quick Settings Panel to Darken the screen further than the device's minimum brightness.
  • Added a One-Handed mode, which pulls the screen into reach.
    • In Android 12, this is only supported if Gesture Navigation is enabled.
  • Added a Game Dashboard and Game Tools for Mobile Games.
  • Added a Secondary Magnification mode in the Magnification Tool, which magnifies a small section of the screen in a floating window.
  • Added a new Alarm tile in the Quick Settings Panel.
  • Added a "Hold Power Button for Assistant" option in gestures.
  • Nearby Share can now share WIFI Networks.
  • Added a Bold Text option to Accessibility.
  • Added a Conversation Widget to the Home Screen.
  • Pressing the Power Button 5+ times will now initiate an Emergency Call.
    • This is enabled by default but can be disabled in System Settings.
  • You can now choose to give access to your Approximate Location instead of your Precise Location.
  • You can now swipe away the Screenshot Toolbar.
  • Apps now show a short Splash Screen, likely to improve performance.
  • Improved System-Wide animations.
  • Added a Monochrome mode to the Accessibility Settings.
  • Added Scrolling Screenshots in supported apps.

Changes[]

  • Lockdown Mode is now enabled by default in the power menu and cannot be disabled.
  • The Wifi and Mobile Data toggles in the Quick Settings Panel have now been merged into an "Internet" toggle.
  • Optimised Charging has now been replaced by Adaptive Charging, which now takes alarms into account.
  • PIP Widgets are now more rounded, to fit with the Material You theme.
  • Screen Timeouts have been moved into the Screen Attention Menu.
  • The Ongoing Call Chip in the Status Bar replaces the Ongoing Call Bubbles.
  • Toast Messages now follow your System Theme.

Removals[]

  • Removed Home Devices, Cards and Passes from power menu. The Menu is now simplified and only shows Power options and an emergency call button.
    • Cards and Passes can still be found in Quick Settings Panel.
  • You can no longer tap icons in the volume slider to quickly mute the respective volume type.

  • Added an "Auto-Rotate screen using camera" option.
  • Added Universal device search.

Removals[]

  • You can no longer customise system-wide fonts or icon shapes.
    • Android 12 now uses Google Sans for the default system-wide font.

Android 12L[]

Android 12L is a version of Android 12 that has improvements specifically for large-sized screen. It was announced in October 2021.[1]
